Why Synthetics?

Newstand_960x240_ConVsSynthSo people ask me a lot, why AMSOIL? They want to know why they should choose AMSOIL over a brand they may find in a big box store. To understand that, I think we need to first look at why they should choose synthetic over conventional lubricants.

Why Synthetics

Conventional oils are refined from crude oil. Crude oil has impurities that naturally occur, things that can’t be completely removed during the refining process. These impurities mix with the molecular chains of hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbons) that cause there to be less saturation of the carbon-hydrogen (CH) bonds. The higher the saturation of CH bonds, the less available bond points that harmful molecules can attach. When other molecules attach to oil molecules, the composition of those molecules is weakened and it’s performance is diminished. Saturated molecules are beneficial because they remain stable longer, unsaturated are much less stable causing oil to breakdown.

The second aspect of synthetics is hidden within the molecular structures. Conventional oil molecules have structures that are randomly organized and of random shape and sizes. This inconsistencies result in limited performance because of less strength and lubricity. And because the structures vary, they can be different from quart to quart on the molecular level.

Because synthetics are chemically controlled, the molecules are uniform in shape and size. Because the create a stronger bond they form a more durable fluid film than conventional oils that help protect your engines metal surfaces, reducing wear and maximizing engine life. The uniformity and strength create stronger bonds between molecules and limit access to impurities to bond. The uniformity allow the lubricating molecules to slip easily across one another, providing improved lubrication performance.

Benefits of AMSOIL synthetics

Because of the science (limited as my scientific knowledge is) stated above, synthetics provide many benefits:

Engine Protection: There is a microscopic film of oil separating metal surfaces in your engine. Because synthetics form a more durable fluid film because of the strong and pure base oils, the reduce wear and maximize engine life.

Cold Starts: Because conventional oil contains paraffin (wax) that will cause conventional oils to thicken in cold temperatures, during startup the thick oil cannot flow through narrow passageways to protect components. Because AMSOIL synthetic oils contain no paraffin, so the oil will remain fluid in cold winter temperatures for improved oil flow on start.

Hot temperatures: Hot temperatures increase the rate of oxidation in conventional oils. Excessive oxidation can lead to varnish and sludge formation, causing thickening fluid, which leads to poor performance. AMSOIL resists oxidation because of the strong bonds and uniformity mentioned previously thus providing superior performance and protection in hot conditions.

Fuel Economy: As mentioned above, conventional oils contain molecules of varying sizes and weights. They are also full of unwanted materials. This requires more energy to circulate throughout your engine, which can reduce fuel economy. They also provide less protection causing more friction and heat which affects your fuel economy. AMSOIL provides uniformity in molecule size, allowing the molecules to easily move past one another using less energy and reduce the energy lost to friction, thus maximizing fuel economy.

Environmental concerns: AMSOIL motor oils are designed to reduce emissions, last longer and reduce fuel consumption, all things that are beneficial to the environment.
