Law of the Mirror

I read a lot of books, business and personal growth ones being one of the genre’s I enjoy.  I like to continually learn about business, life and myself and reading a multitude of books throughout the year is one of my favorite ways to grow in those areas.  On of the books I’m currently reading through is John Maxwell’s “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth“.   All good stuff, but the one I want to talk about today is called the Law of the Mirror.

The Law of the Mirror states “You must see value in yourself to add value to yourself.”  Once you understand this and apply it to your life and your AMSOIL business, you’ll get past one of the largest hurdles all entrepreneurs most likely go through at some point in their career.

John Maxwell says;

I often ask myself what keeps people from being successful.  I believe that all people have seeds of success within them.  All they need to do is cultivate those seeds, water them and they will grow.

The trick is to continually water those seeds.  People are never able to out-perform their own self-image.   The world won’t help you out either.  As Maxwell writes, “If you put a small value on yourself, rest assured the world will not raise the price.”  Apply this to your AMSOIL business.  If you approach your business with hesitation, telling yourself, “I’ll never succeed as highly as some of those at the top of the company,” then there is a high likelihood that you won’t.   Those at the top, approached their business with a can-do attitude.  They approached it with the faith that they would succeed.  Your self-esteem can be your largest hurdle or your greatest advantage.

So Maxwell sets out 10 steps to building your self-image to make sure it is an advantage and not a hindrance to your success.

Guard your self-talk.

If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves.  If we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the way we talk to ourselves.  Become your own best encourager.  When you close a deal or gain a new retail account, don’t forget to compliment yourself.  If you fail to make a sale or bungle a pitch, tell yourself that it’s a price of growth and opportunity to learn.

Stop comparing yourself to others

Don’t compare yourself to how your sponsor is doing or how another dealer across town is doing.  Comparing yourself to others is just a distraction.  Compare yourself to yourself.  That’s the only comparison that matters.  Become better each day.  Focus on what you can do today to improve and grow.  Look back over the weeks or years and see how far you’ve come.

Move beyond your limiting beliefs.

If you don’t believe you can accomplish great things in your AMSOIL business, then you most likely won’t.  Charles Schwab said, “When a man has put a limit on what he will do, he has put a limit on he can do.”

Add value to others

If you have low self-esteem you often see yourself as inadequate or as a victim, you focus on yourself too much.  Focus instead on helping someone else, even something small can lift your self-esteem greatly.  Helping your customers, even if it doesn’t directly result in a sale is a great way to build your self-esteem.  The cycle of positive feeling you receive continues as you help others and that positive self-esteem and activity almost always leads to positive results.

Do the right thing, even if it’s the hard thing.

Do what’s right.  It seems like a simple thing to do, but it’s often not.  I had an Preferred Customer assigned to me through and when I reached out to him, he stated he meant to sign up another dealer that he had a personal relationship with.  Now, I could have probably ignored that and gained the commission from the customer, but the right thing to do was to have AMSOIL transfer to the other dealer, even though that meant losing potential revenue.  I know it felt better to do the right thing and I’m betting that it will lead to something greater down the road through a referral or mutual friendship with customer and dealer.

Practice a small discipline daily in a specific are of your life.

If there is an area in your business that seems overwhelming to you, work at it everyday.  Just keep chipping away at it.  One thing I’m trying to improve on in my own AMSOIL business is product knowledge.  When I first started, I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information available and I was fearful of talking to potential customers for fear of not knowing enough about the products.  Well, each day I try to learn something new about a product.  Then I try to bring that knowledge into the conversation with a customer or potential.  Each day I try to get a bit better and every-time I  learn something new and am able to pass that on to someone else my morale is boosted.

Celebrate small victories

When something goes well, no matter how small, celebrate.  And celebrate positively.  I know when I got my first sale after many failed attempts I had two choices of how my thoughts went.  First I could have thought something like, “well it’s about time” or “that was so small it was hardly worth it” or even worse “It’s hopeless, I guess I’ll call it quits.”  The way our thoughts should go, and I’m a work in progress myself on this, should be “Every little bit helps”, or “I’m that much closer to success”.  Don’t underestimate the power of these small celebrations to inspire us to keep going.

Embrace a positive vision for your life based on what you value

What do you value in yourself and in your business?  Is it financial freedom?  Is it just the act of being an entrepreneur?  What prompts you to see a positive vision for you business?  If you don’t have that vision, then you’re likely to be apathetic about it and wander through your career with varying levels of success, but never reaching your fullness.  Every positive action you take to reach your vision helps you to believe in yourself (and that inspires more positive action).

Practice the one-word strategy

This step is essentially this.  Pick one word, only one, to describe yourself.  What would it be?  If it’s positive, then you can focus on that one word to help you go in the right direction.  If it’s not positive, then it’s time to pick a new word.  What is my one word?  Integrity!  I try to have high integrity in all my business dealings, to be honest and forthright.  Even if it’s at the expense of profit and sales.  To be true to myself, to my one word, is far better.

Take responsibility for your life

This is pretty self-explanatory.  If you don’t take responsibility for your life, to have a vision, a plan and a purpose for your life, then you become a part of someone else’s.

Just like AMSOIL is not a quick way to riches, neither are these steps a quick path to success.  However, I can ensure you that by practicing these will put you on the path to fulfill your vision for yourself and your business.  I’m still a work in progress, both in life and in AMSOIL, but with a plan and positive self esteem, I know I’m heading in the right direction.
