Why Synthetics?

So people ask me a lot, why AMSOIL? They want to know why they should choose AMSOIL over a brand they may find in a big box store. To understand that, I think we need to first look at why they should choose synthetic over conventional lubricants. Why Synthetics Conventional oils are refined from crude oil. Crude oil has impurities that naturally occur, things that can’t be completely removed during the refining process. These impurities mix with the molecular chains of hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbons) that cause there to be less saturation of the carbon-hydrogen (CH) bonds. The higher the …

Lower-Viscosity Motor Oils

Growing up my father owned a service station and I can remember from a very young age that the most popular oil was 10W-40. At the time, I didn’t even know what those numbers meant. I simply sold the oil that people wanted and left it at that. But as I grew older I came to realize that those numbers meant so much more. Let’s take a brief look at this. What is viscosity? In layman’s term, the viscosity is the liquids resistance to flow. It is a lubricant’s most important property.  The viscosity must be high enough to maintain a lubricating film, but low enough …
